Abstract

Pressure ulcers are a common complication experienced by patients on prolonged bed rest and have the potential to cause severe infections, prolong hospitalization, and reduce quality of life. In this context, nurses play a strategic role in pressure ulcer prevention through early risk assessment, regular repositioning, skin integrity maintenance, and the use of appropriate support media. This study aims to examine the role of nurses in implementing pressure ulcer prevention in patients on long-term bed rest. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews with nurses working in the inpatient ward of a regional hospital. The findings indicate that nurses have implemented preventive measures based on risk classification using validated instruments, provided education to patients' families, and collaborated with the multidisciplinary healthcare team. However, challenges remain, including limited nursing staff and a lack of specific training related to pressure ulcer prevention. The results of this study indicate the importance of strengthening continuing education programs and institutional support to improve nurses' competency in pressure ulcer prevention practices. Optimizing nurses' preventive role is believed to significantly reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers and improve patient outcomes.
